Butt Collector
A single cigarette butt takes over 10 years to decompose, polluting our soil, water, and oceans, making it one of the most widespread pollutants on Earth. That’s why we’re launching the Butt Collector initiative: a program that collects used cigarette butts from office drop points and sends them to our recycling partner, where they’re transformed into upcycled ID card holders.
By joining, you help cut pollution, support green innovation, and build an eco-conscious workplace. Every small effort you make contributes to something bigger, proving that together, we can turn waste into impact and shape a more sustainable future.
Greenhouse Gas Calculation
KG Media conducted a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory, resulting in a total of 5,484.54 tons of CO₂e. The majority of emissions came from value chain activities, particularly employee commuting. Other sources included business travel, upstream leased assets, product distribution, and several smaller-scale activities. Emissions also originated from electricity consumption and direct fuel use. The calculation followed the GHG Protocol guidelines using a blended methodology and covered units such as GOD, Kontan, Kompas TV Jakarta, Grid Network, and Media Solutions.
KG Media implements various initiatives based on energy efficiency and waste management. One of these initiatives is replacing all non-LED lights with LED lights in the workplace, accompanied by optimizing the number of light points. This step not only significantly reduces electricity consumption but also contributes to a reduction in scope 2 emissions by up to 8%. On the other hand, KG Media also collaborates with Rekosistem as a waste management service provider to recycle plastic gallon waste collected from the workplace environment.
KG Media developed AI Media Intelligence for SDGs to automate article classification and sentiment analysis, achieving over 90% accuracy across 15 publishers. This innovation saved 30,000+ man-hours and ensured content supports our sustainability goals. It also powers the Lestari Award, an annual recognition of impactful initiatives aligned with the SDGs, ensuring objective, data-driven evaluation. In 2024, the initiative contributed over IDR 8.2 billion in revenue. This breakthrough earned KG Media a finalist spot at the 2025 International News Media Association (INMA) Global Media Awards and won Best AI Use in the Newsroom at the WAN-IFRA Digital Media Awards Asia 2024.
Kompas.com, in collaboration with Saya Pilih Bumi, launched the Wali Asuh Mangrove program at Pantai Pondok Bali, Subang, to offset 211.15 tons of CO2Eq emissions in 2023 by planting 5,000 mangrove seedlings, which are expected to absorb around 217 tons of CO2Eq
